| Initiative against GMO |
|
Zavod MIR, as the initiator, quickly responded to the acceptance of the Law about cohabitation of genetically modified plants with other farm plants, and, in cooperation with other organizations and media, collected in time more than 2.950 signatures in support of a post-acceptance legislative referendum about this law. We were expecting that a 35-day period would be officially declared for the collecting of 40.000 signatures at the administration units across Slovenia, but this did not happen because the Parliament rejected our initiative (the signatures), saying that we filed it too late, even though we acted according to the instructions of the staff of the Parliament. But we believe that the Law that will reach enforcement on June 16th can be worked on, and become more restrictive. Other solutions, like a moratorium are well worth looking into. We would like to make clear that Zavod MIR is not specifically against the law which was accepted. Indeed, before, there was no regulation at all; so, it's a first step. But... The citizens of Slovenia have not been consulted prior to make this law (and it's not by inviting few NGOs that it is called "consultation" of all citizens), while such decision have an impact of the whole Slovenia! If 1 field of GMO is allowed in the country, within years the whole country is infected (like is South America nowadays). This, we surely don't want. Therefore, our engagement is to request a moratorium based on the principle of safety which would not allow ANY form of cultivating GMO till there is no 100% guarantee it doesn't represents ANY danger for the health of humans, animals, and nature! Meanwhile, the actual law shall be strenghtened in a way it couldn't allow any culture of GMO in any for of open area, even when/if the moratorium would later to be lifted. The referendum requested was not ment to go against the actual law regulating GMO, but to strenghten the legislation, in favor of a moratorium forbidding the culture of GMO in Slovenia, invoking the principle of safety... as did France, Luxembourg, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Greece, ... which have banned GMO! The other countries have unethically succumbed to the pressure of lobbies endangering the whole planet for the sake of money! Will Slovenia do the same? |
